Despite the “Gilly Hicks, Sydney” moniker, Gilly Hicks, is an American brand… the creation of Abercrombie & Fitch man Michael Jeffries. Its Australian heritage — completely fabricated — includes an elaborate back story of how, in 1932, English Gilly opened her first lingerie store in Sydney.
Eccentric stuff. But the brand – which is thought of as the cheeky cousin of A&F — does a nice line in darn pretty lingerie, sporty clothing and beauty products… and some of their bras come in AA-cups.
Too good to be true? Yes, frankly it is. When I say AA-cups, it seems that only 32AA and 34AA cup sizes are catered for. And there are lots of styles where AA-cups either aren’t available, or they are only offered in a small selection of colours. That said, it’s a start: a mainstream brand that acknowledges AA-cup women’s quest for fashion-forward bras.
There are Gilly Hicks stores throughout the US and one in London’s White City. The US website offers shipping to global destinations, while the UK website covers UK destinations only. Here’s what I found when I rooted around on the UK site:
Reese push em up plunge bra, £30, Gilly Hicks: Billed as Gilly Hicks’ “sexiest push up ever”, this bra looks well cut and is made from a sleek, lightweight fabric. On the downside, when I was browsing, navy, white and pale pink were the only colours available in AA-cup sizes. This is particularly frustrating considering that other cup sizes were on offer in a selection of 19 colourways, including beautiful brights, florals and ginghams.
Blake push up polished balconet bra, £30, Gilly Hicks: Lovely looking balconet bra in a lightweight fabric with a subtle shine, with mesh wings. At the time of my window-shop, this was available in light grey, pink, white, dark tan and cream in AA cup sizes.
Mackenzie push up lace balconet bra, £34, Gilly Hicks: This bra features soft, feminine lace, cotton twill straps, logo embossed grommet detail and back convertibility to create a racer-back. At the time of my visit to the site, this was available in AA-cup sizes in cream, light pink, white, grey and pink.
