Is your lingerie looking dated? Take stock on National Underwear Day (or thereabouts)

Oops, I missed National Underwear Day (August 5th). Thankfully, I was inadvertently celebrating appropriately by wearing a rather nice pair of frilly knickers and a lacy bra. So all is not lost.

Strikes me as a funny thing to create a national day for underwear.  But I’m open minded, and any day that encourages folk to discard threadbare hangers-on from their lingerie drawer — and invest in garments worth celebration – is good with me.

Freshpair.com sent me some shocking statistics that seem to support the need for an underwear day: 

• 80% of adult Americans never change their underwear style
• 60% don’t wear underwear that fits

More than a Handful's a waste: The Handful Inc sports bra, $44.95, available at Sugarchilli

Small-busted women may not experience the same boing factor during sport as bigger breasted females (8.5cm movement is the average), but their gentle curves still need support to prevent breast pain, upper back and shoulder problems — and the dreaded droop.

Breasts are made up of fatty tissue, supported by skin and fragile ligaments. During repetitive or high impact sport, they bounce up and down, pulling on the ligaments and stretching them irrevocably. The result: boobs head south. Or, in the case of very small breasts, their pert, “upturned nose” contour flattens out.
