This time my guest guru is Martine Alexander, personal stylist, fashion magazine stylist — and expert in all things sartorial. The question comes from a fan on the SBBH Facebook Page:
“I really like tops and dresses that emphasise the bust area with an Empire line below the bust, or a different colour or pattern on the bust.
“However, as a woman with a 34AA cup size, is it better to wear something that does not focus on the bust and highlight what is not there?
“Or, does a different colour or pattern on the bust actually make it look larger?”
It’s a good question. Thanks to Martine for this thoughtful response:
A different pattern on the bust area does indeed trick the eye into thinking you have a bigger bust. Horizontal patterns, breast pockets and ruffles are also effective ways to give your bust a fuller appearance.
Sometimes block colour can have the opposite effect and make the bust look smaller. My advice is to avoid having the darkest colour on the bust — remember darker colours are slimming. Instead, opt for lighter colours nearer the face and bust (like the dress from Miss Selfridge, pictured).
