More than a Handful's a waste: The Handful Inc sports bra, $44.95, available at Sugarchilli

Small-busted women may not experience the same boing factor during sport as bigger breasted females (8.5cm movement is the average), but their gentle curves still need support to prevent breast pain, upper back and shoulder problems — and the dreaded droop.

Breasts are made up of fatty tissue, supported by skin and fragile ligaments. During repetitive or high impact sport, they bounce up and down, pulling on the ligaments and stretching them irrevocably. The result: boobs head south. Or, in the case of very small breasts, their pert, “upturned nose” contour flattens out.

So what should A-cup and AA-cup women be looking for in a sports bra to keep their breasts in prime condition while they work out? I asked my friends at Sugarchilli to advise:

At Sugarchilli, we now stock only one style of sports bra, as it ticks all the boxes we feel are necessary. A small-busted sports bra must:

  • Be supportive for most types of physical exercise
  • Flatter a small bust — NOT flatten
  • Combat “fripple” (frozen nipples)
  • Avoid mono-boob syndrome
  • Be durable and easy to wash

We used to stock a variety of sports bras, but we have pared this back to one style now: The Handful Inc padded sports bra, designed by fitness expert Jennifer Ferguson, which really covers off everything. Most importantly, it was designed specifically for small busted women, as explained by Jennifer in this video. Rather than squashing gentle curves, it has removable foam pads that provide shape, as well as enhancing support and concealing nipples.

Suitable for all types of sports from kick-boxing to yoga and dance, this bra is made from breathable fabric. Design features such as ruching and centre stitching accentuate curves and prevent mono-boob syndrome. It has thin cross over straps for a more feminine look than lots of sports bras that have very chunky straps — so you can wear it with spaghetti strap tops too, which our customers love.

Last week, a survey by Easyjet found that women take twice as many knickers on holiday than they need. They also take an average of seven bras for a week away, but wear only four of them. I can well believe this, as I’ve often been guilty of an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink style of holiday packing. Particularly when it comes to lingerie and shoes.

It got me thinking: what’s the ideal capsule of bras to see you through a holiday? I asked some small-cup specialists to suggest the AA-cup and A-cup bras that should be included in a finely-tuned packing list. Here’s what they came up with:

Petites Seamless Mesh Contour Bra

Wacoal Petites Seamless Mesh Bra, £28.51, Freshpair.com

Freshpair.com: I recommend taking a wireless bra. As it’s more flexible, it takes up less bag space. A good one is the Wacoal Petites Seamless Mesh Contour Bra. It has a plunging V neckline, perfect for summer fashions, and an extremely breathable mesh fabric, ideal in hot weather. Sizes available include 32-36 AA-C.

Isis smooth-cup push up bra, $60, Itsy Bitsy Bra Bar

Itsy Bitsy Bra Bar: The Isis smooth-cup push up bra with three-way adjustable straps is our best bra for versatility. The convertible straps can be worn normally, like a halter, or a racerback. The softly-padded, contoured cups give smaller-chested women a lovely shape under tank tops, t-shirts, halter tops and dresses. Available in sizes: 32A, 32B, 34A, 34B, 36A, 36B.

Floral non-wired traingle bra, £16, Irresistible Lingerie

Irresistible Lingerie: The non-wired triangle bra in our floral range is perfect to sleep in on hot summer nights. It’s 100% cotton as well as being unbelievably cute and flirty. Sizing is as per UK dress sizes: 8/10, 10/12, 12/14, 14/16.

Sascha strapless bra, $60, The Little Bra Company

The Little Bra Company: Sascha, our strapless bra is a must-have on vacation. Whether it’s for wearing with a summer strapless dress or an evening gown, Sascha does double-duty. Straps are included, so it can be worn like an everyday bra underneath t-shirts and dresses as well. Sizes available include 28-36 A-B.

After Eden lightweight gel bra, £24, Small Wonder Lingerie

Small Wonder Lingerie: I suggest the gorgeous After Eden lightweight gel bra. I have got the nude one, which is perfect in the summer under white and pale coloured tops and dresses. The greatest thing about this bra is that it is lightly padded and gives my boobs a great shape. AND it is the most comfortable bra I have ever worn.
